Texture in art is how something looks like it feels, or how it actually feels when you touch it.

Think about your favorite things at home. When you pet a fluffy kitten, touch a scratchy tree trunk, or run your hand over a cold, smooth kitchen window, your fingers are feeling real texture.

Artists use texture to bring their artwork to life, and they do this in two different ways:

  • Textures you can actually feel (Actual Texture): Sometimes artists put thick, gooey paint on a canvas, glue real sand into a picture, or carve hard stone into a statue. If you gently touch it, your fingers feel real bumps, ridges, and grooves, just like touching a crunchy pinecone.
  • Textures that trick your eyes (Visual Texture): Other times, a painting or drawing is totally flat, but the artist uses clever lines, colors, and shadows to make things look real. A drawing of a fluffy teddy bear might look super soft and cuddly, but if you touch the paper, it just feels flat and smooth.
Just like you can tell the difference between your soft bed blanket and a rough sidewalk without even thinking about it, texture in art helps you imagine how the world inside a picture would feel if you could jump right into it.
