ELI5: What Is Tenebrism?

Tenebrism is a style where a single bright light shines on one specific thing, while everything else around it is swallowed up in pitch-black darkness.

Imagine you are in a completely dark room at night, and you turn on a powerful flashlight to point it directly at your favorite toy. The toy looks super bright, vivid, and important, but you cannot see the walls, the floor, or anything else in the room because the shadows are so thick. That dramatic look is tenebrism.

You can see tenebrism in your everyday life all the time:

• Blowing out birthday candles: When the room lights are off and you lean over a glowing birthday cake, the fire lights up just your smiling face while the rest of the room disappears into the dark.
• Using a phone in bed: When you check your glowing screen under the covers at night, only your hands and eyes are illuminated, surrounded by deep black shadows.
• A singer on a dark stage: In a big concert, the stadium lights go out and a single spotlight hits the singer, making them the only thing visible in a sea of darkness.
• Car headlights at night: Walking down an unlit country road, a car's headlights will suddenly freeze a deer in bright light while the entire forest behind it stays pitch black.
