ELI5: What is supply and demand?
Imagine you have lots of your favorite toy, let's say cars. Your friends also want those cars!
- Supply is how many cars you have. If you have a big box full, the supply is high. If you only have one, the supply is low.
- Demand is how many of your friends want the cars. If everyone wants one, the demand is high. If nobody cares about them, the demand is low.
- High Demand, Low Supply: Everyone wants your single car! You can ask for a lot to trade for it, like maybe all their cookies! The price (in cookies) goes up.
- Low Demand, High Supply: You have tons of cars, but nobody wants them. You might have to give them away for free, or trade them for just one cookie. The price goes down.
- Balanced Demand and Supply: Just the right number of friends want a car, and you have just enough. You can trade them for a fair price, like maybe two cookies each.
economics, supply and demand work like this with everything – not just cars! If lots of people want something (high demand) but there isn't much of it available (low supply), the price goes up. If nobody wants something (low demand) and there's lots of it (high supply), the price goes down. This helps decide how much things cost! How was this explanation?
