ELI5: What Is Space in Art?

Space in art is the area that an artist leaves empty or fills up to show where things are and how close or far away they seem.

Think about your own bedroom to understand how this works:

• Positive Space: This is the stuff that fills up the room, like your bed, your toy box, and your teddy bear. In a drawing, this is the main thing the artist wants you to look at, like a dog or a flower.
• Negative Space: This is the open floor where you can walk, sit, or play. In a drawing, this is the empty area around the dog, like the blank paper or the open blue sky.

• Making things look close or far: When you look out the window at cars on the street, the car parked right in front of your house looks huge, but the car far down the road looks tiny like an ant. Artists do the exact same trick on flat paper. By drawing things big or small, they create the feeling of deep, open space.
• Overlapping: If your cat sits right in front of the TV, you cannot see the whole screen because the cat is in the way. Artists overlap things to show which object is in front and which is behind.
• Giving things room to breathe: If you put all your toys into one tiny corner of your room, it feels crowded and messy. But if you spread them out, it feels calm. Artists arrange their drawings so the picture feels either busy or peaceful, depending on the story they want to tell.
