ELI5: What is Solar Eclipse?

16 views Feb 16, 2026 2 min read

Imagine you and your friend are playing catch with a ball. You are the Earth, your friend is the Sun, and the ball is the Moon.

Normally, the Sun (your friend) shines light on you (Earth), and you can see everything clearly.

Now, imagine that the Moon (the ball) flies right in front of your friend (the Sun) while they are about to throw the ball.

That's basically what a solar eclipse is!

  • The Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth.
  • Because the Moon is smaller than both the Sun and Earth, it can't block all the sunlight.
  • The Moon casts a shadow on a small part of Earth.
If you are standing in the darkest part of the shadow (the umbra), it will look like the Sun has almost disappeared! It might get darker, like twilight, even during the day. This is called a total solar eclipse. You need special glasses to look at it.

If you're standing in the lighter part of the shadow (the penumbra), you'll see a partial solar eclipse. It looks like the Moon has taken a bite out of the Sun. Again, special glasses are essential to protect your eyes.

Think of it like this:

  • Sun: A big, bright flashlight.
  • Moon: A small ball.
  • Earth: You, standing in a room.
When the ball (Moon) blocks the flashlight (Sun), you (Earth) are in shadow and it gets darker. It's a cool event to see, but remember always to protect your eyes!
