ELI5: What Is Shape in Art?

A shape in art is a flat, closed space made when lines connect or when colors meet, just like a cutout piece of paper.

Imagine you are coloring in a coloring book. When you draw a line that goes all the way around and comes back to touch where it started, you trap an area of space inside. That trapped space is a shape.

Shapes are completely flat, which means they have height and width, but no thickness. Think of a pancake before you eat it, a sticker on your notebook, or your shadow on the sidewalk.

In everyday life and art, you can find two main kinds of shapes:

• Geometric shapes: These are neat, tidy, and have specific names. They are the shapes you learn in school, like the circle of a clock, the square of a window, the rectangle of a smartphone screen, or the triangle of a yummy slice of pizza. Artists use these to make things look organized, modern, or patterned.
• Organic shapes: These are free, curvy, and uneven shapes made by nature. There are no strict rules for how they look. Think of the wiggly outline of a cloud, the shape of a fallen leaf, the splash of spilled milk, or a funny doodle you make without thinking. Artists use these to make pictures of living things like animals and plants.
