ELI5: What is salmonella?

7 views Aug 14, 2026 1 min read

Salmonella is a tiny germ that can make your tummy hurt if you eat or drink something contaminated.

It is a kind of bacteria, which means it is so small you cannot see it, but it can still make people sick. It often hides in foods like raw or undercooked eggs, chicken, meat, or dirty water.

  • If salmonella gets into your body, it can make you feel:
- Diarrhea - Fever - Stomach cramps - Sometimes vomiting
  • You can think of it like invisible “bad bugs” sneaking into your food and then upsetting your stomach.
  • It can spread when:
- Food is not cooked enough - Hands are not washed after touching animals or raw meat - Food or water gets dirty
  • A simple way to avoid it is:
- Wash hands - Cook food well - Keep raw food away from ready-to-eat food

Most people get better after a few days with rest and fluids, but some people can get more seriously ill.
