ELI5: What Is Realism in Art?
Realism in art is painting or drawing everyday life exactly as it looks in the real world, without using magic, filters, or make-believe.
Imagine you have a magic camera that takes pictures of anything you want.
- Some artists like to use their imagination to paint things that aren't real, like flying purple dragons, sparkly fairies, or kings with giant golden crowns. That is like playing a fantasy game.
- A Realist artist does the exact opposite. They want to paint what is happening right in front of them, like your dad making pancakes, a dog taking a nap on the rug, or a mail carrier walking in the rain.
Instead of painting a grand castle, a Realist painter might paint:
- A farmer digging in the dirt with muddy boots
- People laughing and eating soup at a noisy kitchen table
- Tired workers riding a train after a long day
- A messy bedroom with laundry on the floor
They do not try to make the world look cleaner, prettier, or more magical than it actually is. If someone has messy hair, holes in their socks, or dirt on their hands, the artist paints that, too.
In short, Realism is about showing the beauty, honesty, and truth of the ordinary world we live in every single day.
