ELI5: What Is Proportion in Art?

Proportion in art means making sure the sizes of different parts look right when you compare them to each other.

Imagine building a snowman in your front yard. If you make the head as big as a car and the body as tiny as a baseball, the snowman will look silly and fall over. But if you make a big snowball for the bottom, a medium one for the middle, and a small one for the head, it looks just right. That is proportion.

Artists use proportion just like you do in everyday life:

• Drawing a person: You make sure the hands are not bigger than the whole body, or that the nose is not larger than the entire face.
• Setting the dinner table: A drinking glass is usually smaller than a dinner plate, and a spoon is smaller than a frying pan. If an artist paints a tiny plate with a giant fork next to it, the proportion looks strange.
• Building with blocks: When you build a toy house, you make the door smaller than the walls so a toy figure can fit inside properly.

However, artists can also change proportions on purpose just for fun. Think of your favorite cartoons: characters often have giant eyes and tiny feet. The artist made those parts the "wrong" size on purpose to make the cartoon look funny, cute, or magical.

In simple words, proportion is just a size game that helps an artist decide how big or small each part of a picture should be.
