ELI5: What is photosynthesis?
Imagine plants are like tiny chefs! They need food to grow big and strong, just like you need yummy snacks. But they don't go to the store. They make their own food using something called photosynthesis.
Think of it this way:
- Sunlight: This is like the oven or stovetop for the plant-chef. It provides the energy needed to cook.
- Water: Plants suck up water from the ground through their roots, just like you drink water.
- Carbon Dioxide: This is a gas in the air that we breathe out (and cars let out). Plants "breathe" it in through tiny holes in their leaves.
- The plant takes in sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
- Inside the leaves (the plant's kitchen!), there's a green stuff called
chlorophyll. Think of it as the special ingredient. - The
chlorophylluses the sunlight to turn the water and carbon dioxide into sugar (glucose). This sugar is the plant's food! - As a byproduct, the plant releases oxygen into the air. This is the air we breathe!
