ELI5: What Is Neoclassicism?

Neoclassicism is an art and design style where people decided to bring back the simple, neat, and balanced look of ancient Greece and Rome because they were tired of things looking too fancy and messy.

Imagine you have a toy box overflowing with glitter, ribbons, and chaotic colors. After a while, your room feels too wild, so you decide to clean it up and build neat, strong towers using simple, solid wooden blocks instead. That is exactly what happened with Neoclassicism about two hundred and fifty years ago. People got bored of overly decorated, frilly designs and wanted things to look clean, orderly, and serious again, just like the ancient temples they admired.

You can still see Neoclassicism all around you in everyday life today:

• Big Important Buildings: When you see a bank, a museum, or a government building like the White House, it often has tall, straight columns holding up a giant triangle roof. It looks strong, quiet, and balanced, just like an old Roman building.
• Fancy Living Rooms: If you visit a house with straight-legged wooden chairs, simple white walls, and neat picture frames instead of giant gold swirls and messy patterns, that is neoclassic decorating.
• School and Town Statues: Statues in city parks that show heroes standing tall, looking brave and calm, often wearing simple robes or looking like ancient marble statues.
• Formal Clothes: Long, flowing dresses with high waists, like the ones you might see in period movies, were designed to look like the breezy, simple tunics worn in ancient times.
