ELI5: What Is Line in Art?

A line in art is a moving dot that creates a path, just like the trail a pencil leaves behind when you drag it across a piece of paper.

Imagine you are playing in the sand at the beach and dragging a stick behind you as you walk. Everywhere you go, that stick leaves a mark. In art, a line is that exact mark, connecting one point to another. It is the very first building block you use whenever you draw anything, from a smiley face to a giant castle.

You can find and use lines everywhere in your everyday life:

• Straight lines: Think of the tall, standing-up tree trunks in a park or the flat sidewalk you walk on. These lines can make a picture feel tall, strong, or calm.
• Curved lines: Think of a smiling mouth, the arch of a rainbow, or a winding slide at the playground. Curved lines make drawings feel soft, happy, and gentle.
• Zigzag lines: Think of a flash of lightning during a storm or the sharp teeth of an alligator. These lines show energy, speed, and excitement.
• Dotted lines: Think of the painted stripes on a road or a treasure map showing where to walk.

Whenever you outline a shape, write your name, or scribble on a page, you are using lines to turn your ideas into a picture.
