ELI5: What is Lidar and How it work?
Imagine you're playing echo in a big, empty room. You shout and listen for your voice to bounce back to you. The time it takes for the echo to return tells you how far away the wall is.
Lidar is like that, but instead of your voice, it uses light, specifically laser beams.
Here's how it works in everyday life:
- The Source: A Lidar system has a laser that shoots out lots of tiny, invisible beams of light very quickly. Think of it like a super-fast strobe light, but with lasers!
- The Bounce: These laser beams hit objects around them – buildings, trees, cars, even the ground.
- The Measurement: The Lidar sensor measures how long it takes for each laser beam to bounce back. Because light travels at a known speed (
speed of light), the system can precisely calculate the distance to each object.
- Creating a Map: By sending out millions of laser beams and measuring the distance to millions of points, Lidar creates a detailed 3D map of the surroundings. This is like building a picture out of lots of tiny dots, where each dot represents a point in space.
- Self-driving cars: Use Lidar to "see" the road, other cars, and pedestrians, helping them navigate safely.
- Smartphone Cameras: Some phones use Lidar to improve augmented reality (AR) experiences like placing virtual furniture in your room.
- Mapping the Earth: Scientists use Lidar from airplanes to create detailed maps of forests, cities, and even underwater environments.
- Robotics: Robot vacuums use Lidar to navigate your house without bumping into things.
