ELI5: What is Islam and what do Muslims believe?

Islam is a religion where people called Muslims believe in one God, called Allah, and follow His teachings to live a good life.

Imagine you have a favorite superhero, like Superman. Muslims think of Allah as the ultimate superhero, the most powerful and kindest being ever! To learn how to be good like Superman, you read comic books about him, right? Well, Muslims read a special book called the Quran, which they believe is Allah's word, to learn how to live a good life.

Here's how it affects their everyday life:

• Praying: Imagine talking to your superhero every day to ask for guidance and thank him for everything. Muslims pray five times a day facing a special building in Mecca called the Kaaba.
• Giving to the poor (Zakat): Just like sharing your toys with your friends, Muslims give some of their money to help people who don't have enough.
• Fasting (Sawm): During the month of Ramadan, Muslims don't eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. It's like skipping lunch to remember what it feels like to be hungry and to be thankful for what you have.
• Pilgrimage (Hajj): If they can, Muslims try to visit Mecca once in their life. It’s like going to the ultimate Superman convention!
• Believing in Allah and his prophets: Muslims believe that Allah sent messengers, called prophets, to teach people. The most important prophet for Muslims is Muhammad, who they believe received the Quran from Allah.
