ELI5: What is GIF?
Imagine you have a flipbook. You draw slightly different pictures on each page, and when you flip through them quickly, it looks like the picture is moving!
A GIF is kind of like a digital flipbook. It's a short, looping video that doesn't have any sound.
Think of it this way:
- A GIF is a special type of image file, like a
.jpgor a.png, but instead of showing just one picture, it shows a series of pictures. - These pictures play one after another, very quickly, creating a short animation.
- Once it reaches the end, it starts again from the beginning, playing in a loop. That's why GIFs seem to go on forever!
- Social Media: Funny reactions on Twitter or Facebook.
- Messaging Apps: Sending a little dance or a waving hand in a text.
- Websites: Small animations to make a website more interesting.
- They're small files, so they load quickly.
- They're easy to share.
- They can be really funny or expressive.
