ELI5: What is GIF?

Imagine you have a flipbook. You draw slightly different pictures on each page, and when you flip through them quickly, it looks like the picture is moving!

A GIF is kind of like a digital flipbook. It's a short, looping video that doesn't have any sound.

Think of it this way:

• A GIF is a special type of image file, like a .jpg or a .png, but instead of showing just one picture, it shows a series of pictures.
• These pictures play one after another, very quickly, creating a short animation.
• Once it reaches the end, it starts again from the beginning, playing in a loop. That's why GIFs seem to go on forever!

• Social Media: Funny reactions on Twitter or Facebook.
• Messaging Apps: Sending a little dance or a waving hand in a text.
• Websites: Small animations to make a website more interesting.

• They're small files, so they load quickly.
• They're easy to share.
• They can be really funny or expressive.
