ELI5: What Is Form in Art?

In art, form is the three-dimensional shape of an object that has height, width, and depth, meaning it looks or feels like something you can actually hold in your hands.

Think about drawing a simple flat circle on a piece of paper with a crayon. That flat circle is just a shape. But if you take a lump of playdough and roll it between your palms until it becomes a round ball, you just made a form.

You see forms all around you every single day:

• A slice of paper is a flat shape, but a cardboard cereal box is a 3D form you can pick up.
• A flat drawing of a triangle is a shape, but a real, crunchy ice cream cone is a form that holds your favorite treat.
• An outline of a person on a bathroom door sign is a shape, but you, your family, and your pets are all living, moving forms.

• Real Forms (Sculpture): Artists use clay, wood, metal, or stone to build things you can walk around and touch, like a statue of a superhero or a toy car.
• Illusion of Form (Drawing and Painting): Artists use shadows and bright spots of light on a flat canvas to fool your eyes, making a painted apple look so round and juicy that you feel like you could reach out and grab it off the wall.
