ELI5: What is evolution?

Imagine you have a big box of LEGO bricks. You can build all sorts of things with them, right? Animals and plants are kind of like LEGO creations, but instead of plastic, they're made of something called DNA.

Evolution is like a slow game of LEGO building where the instructions change a little bit over a very long time.

Here's how it works:

• Tiny Changes (Mutations): Sometimes, when a baby animal or plant is being made, there's a tiny mistake copying the DNA. It's like getting a slightly different colored LEGO brick. These mistakes are called mutations.

• Survival of the Fittest (Natural Selection): Some of these tiny changes help the animal or plant survive better. Maybe a giraffe has a slightly longer neck, so it can reach more leaves. Or a bunny is slightly better camouflaged, making it harder for foxes to see them. These animals are more likely to survive and have babies. This process is called natural selection.

• Passing it On (Inheritance): When these animals have babies, they pass on the slightly changed DNA to their kids. The kids also have longer necks or better camouflage.

• Over Time (Generations): Over many, many generations (like hundreds or thousands of years), these tiny changes add up. The giraffes get longer and longer necks, or the bunnies get even better camouflage. Eventually, they might become very different from their ancestors.
