ELI5: What is equity?
Equity means everyone gets the resources and support they need to succeed, even if it's different for each person.
Imagine a baseball game where three kids, Alex, Ben, and Carol, want to watch over a fence.
- Equality means giving each kid the same size box to stand on. If Alex is tall, he can see perfectly. Ben is average height and can see okay. But Carol is small, and even with the box, she still can't see. They all got the same thing, but not everyone benefited equally.
- Equity means giving each kid the right size box so they can all see over the fence. Alex doesn't need a box at all. Ben gets a small box. Carol gets a big box. Now everyone can see the game!
For example:
- Providing extra tutoring to students who are struggling in school.
- Giving financial aid to low-income families so their kids can go to college.
- Creating programs to help people from disadvantaged backgrounds find jobs.
