Emphasis in art is a special trick an artist uses to make one specific part of a picture grab your attention before anything else.

Think of it like being the "star of the show." When you look at a painting, the artist does not want your eyes to wander around aimlessly. Instead, they create a focal point, which is the exact spot they want you to notice first.

You see this happen in everyday life all the time:

• The bright raincoat: Imagine a rainy, cloudy day where everything looks gray and dark. If your friend walks outside wearing a bright, shiny yellow raincoat, your eyes will instantly look right at them. The bright color makes your friend stand out against the dull background.
• The school concert: Imagine a dark stage where the school choir is singing. Suddenly, a bright spotlight shines directly on one singer doing a solo. You naturally look at the person in the light, not the people standing in the shadows.
• The giant balloon: If you walk into a room filled with tiny marbles, but right in the middle sits a giant, red beach ball, you will look at the big ball first simply because it is so much larger than everything else.

• Bright colors surrounded by dull, quiet colors.
• Large shapes placed next to tiny ones.
