ELI5: What is democracy?
Imagine our society is like a big playground, and we all live in it. In a democracy, everyone gets a say in deciding what happens on the playground.
Instead of one person, like a dictator, making all the rules (no swings today!), we all get to help. How do we do that?
- Voting: Think of it like choosing your favorite flavor of ice cream. Everyone gets a ticket (a vote), and you pick what you want. The flavor with the most votes wins! In society, we vote for people (representatives) to make decisions for us. These people are like the playground committee.
- Fair Rules (Laws): Democracy has rules that everyone must follow. These rules are called
laws. They make sure everyone is treated fairly and has the same chance to play. For example, the laws might say everyone gets a turn on the slide.
- Freedom of Speech: You can say what you think is best for the playground, even if others don't agree. That's called
freedom of speech. You can suggest new games, complain about broken equipment, or even try to convince others to vote for your favorite ice cream flavor!
- Equality: Everyone's vote counts the same. Rich or poor, tall or short, everyone gets one vote. This means everyoneβs opinion is important.
- Accountability: If the playground committee (our representatives) isn't doing a good job, we can vote for someone else next time. They are responsible to us.
