ELI5: What Is Contrast in Art?

Contrast in art is simply putting two very different things right next to each other so that both of them stand out and catch your eye.

Think about everyday life to understand how this works:

• Dark and Bright: Imagine looking at the sky at night. You can see the stars clearly because they are tiny, bright lights placed against a completely dark sky. If you tried to see those same stars during a sunny afternoon, you could not, because there is no contrast.
• Big and Small: Imagine an enormous adult elephant walking right beside a tiny newborn mouse. The elephant looks even more gigantic, and the mouse looks even tinier, simply because they are standing together.
• Warm and Cool Colors: Think about wearing a bright red winter hat while standing in a yard covered in freezing white snow. That red hat immediately grabs everyone's attention because it pops against the cold background.
• Rough and Smooth: Picture a soft, fluffy kitten sitting on a hard, bumpy rock. You instantly notice the kitten's softness because the rock is so rough.

Without contrast, everything blends together and looks like a glass of milk spilled on a white sheet of paper—boring and hard to see! Artists use contrast like a flashlight to show your eyes the most important and exciting parts of their pictures.
