ELI5: What Is Composition in Art?

Composition in art is the way an artist decides to arrange and place all the different things inside a picture so it looks nice and makes sense.

Imagine you are packing a lunchbox for school. You have a sandwich, an apple, a juice box, and a cookie. If you just smash everything into a corner, your sandwich gets squished and the box is messy. But if you put the big sandwich in the middle, the round apple in the corner, and slide the juice box right next to it, everything fits nicely, stays safe, and looks delicious when you open it. That smart arrangement is just like composition.

You use composition in everyday life all the time without even knowing it:

• Taking a family photo: When you gather everyone together, you put the tall parents in the back and the short kids in the front so nobody's face gets blocked.
• Setting the dinner table: You place the big plate right in the middle, the fork on the left, the spoon on the right, and the cup at the top so everything is easy to find and looks neat.
• Cleaning your bedroom: You put your big toy box against the wall and line up your favorite stuffed animals on the bed, creating a space that feels balanced and tidy instead of chaotic.
