ELI5: What is cognitive dissonance?

Context: Psychology 3 views Apr 1, 2026 2 min read

Cognitive dissonance is the uncomfortable feeling you get when you hold two conflicting beliefs or your actions don't match your beliefs.

Imagine you love eating candy, but you also know candy is bad for your teeth. That uncomfortable feeling of wanting candy but knowing it's bad? That's cognitive dissonance! It's like having two puzzle pieces that just don't fit together in your brain.

Here's why it happens and what you might do:

  • Conflicting thoughts: You have one thought ("Candy is yummy!") and another thought ("Candy causes cavities!").
  • Feeling uncomfortable: This clash of ideas creates an unpleasant feeling – the dissonance. Your brain doesn't like things to be inconsistent.
  • Trying to reduce the discomfort: To feel better, you might try to change something. You have a few options:
Change your belief: You could tell yourself, "Candy isn't that bad for my teeth. I brush them well enough!" (Making excuses). Change your behavior: You could decide to stop eating candy altogether. (The hard but healthy choice!). Add a new belief: You could think, "Eating candy makes me happy, and happiness is good for my health!" (Justifying your actions).

Another example: Pretend your best friend wears an ugly hat. You believe you should always be honest with your friends, but you also believe you shouldn't hurt their feelings.

  • Dissonance: Lying about the hat or telling the truth both feel wrong.
  • Resolution: You might say something like, "That's a very interesting* hat!" (A little white lie) or avoid the topic entirely.
Essentially, cognitive dissonance describes the mental gymnastics we do to make our thoughts and actions feel consistent, even if it means bending the truth a little bit (or a lot!).
