ELI5: What Is Chiaroscuro?

6 views Sep 23, 2026 2 min read

Chiaroscuro is an Italian word that describes using strong, dramatic differences between bright light and deep, dark shadows to make things look exciting, moody, or three-dimensional.

Imagine you are sitting in a completely dark room, and someone suddenly turns on a single flashlight and points it right at your face. One side of your nose is super bright and glowing, while the other side is hiding in a deep, black shadow. That strong contrast between bright light and dark shadow is chiaroscuro.

You can spot this in everyday life all the time:

  • Telling campfire stories: When someone holds a flashlight under their chin in the dark to tell a spooky story, the harsh shadows make their face look dramatic and mysterious.
  • Movie night: In action or mystery movies, a detective might stand under a single glowing streetlamp on a pitch-black night, hiding half of their face in the shadows.
  • Sunny bedrooms: When the sun shines through the window blinds in the morning, it paints bright stripes of golden light across a dark floor.
  • Birthday cakes: When the lights are turned off and you blow out the candles, the tiny flames make your hands and face glow while everything else in the room disappears into darkness.
Artists and photographers use this trick on purpose because light makes things pop forward, while shadows make things look deep and round, just like real life instead of a flat piece of paper.
