ELI5: What is Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and how it works?
Imagine our Earth is like a big bathtub. We're constantly filling it with carbon dioxide (CO2), a gas, when we do things like drive cars, use electricity, and make things in factories. Too much CO2 in the "tub" makes the Earth warmer, like a hot bath!
Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is like trying to take some of the water (CO2) out of that bathtub. It's a way to actively remove CO2 that's already in the air. It's different from just stopping adding more CO2 in the first place!
Here's how some CDR methods work, explained like you're five:
- Planting Lots of Trees: Trees are like natural sponges for CO2. They suck it out of the air to grow, just like they need water. More trees = more CO2 sucked up! This is like using a big, leafy sponge to soak up the water.
- Direct Air Capture: Imagine a giant vacuum cleaner that sucks in air. This special vacuum cleans out the CO2 and then either stores it underground (like putting the water in a special container) or uses it to make something else (like recycling the water to water plants).
- Making Rocks Eat CO2: Some rocks naturally absorb CO2 over a very long time. Scientists are trying to speed up this process. They spread special rocks on land or in the ocean, and the rocks "eat" the CO2 from the air or water.
- Ocean Fertilization: The ocean is full of tiny plants (like seaweed). If we give them extra food (fertilizer), they grow more and suck up more CO2. This is like adding plant food to make your garden grow faster and bigger!
CDR is important because even if we stop adding so much CO2, there's already a lot in the "tub" (atmosphere). We need to remove some of it to cool things down! It's like emptying some water from the overfilled tub to make it just right.
