ELI5: What Is Balance in Art?

Balance in art is the way an artist arranges things in a picture so that the whole artwork feels steady and pleasing, just like a playground seesaw that is perfectly level.

Imagine you are playing on a seesaw with a friend. If both of you weigh the same, the seesaw stays flat and comfortable. But if a grown-up sits on one side and a tiny puppy sits on the other, the seesaw crashes down on one end. That is what visual balance is all about—making sure one side of a picture does not feel too "heavy" compared to the other.

Artists create balance using things you see every day:

• Symmetrical balance (The Mirror): This is like looking at your own face or a butterfly. If you draw a line right down the middle, both sides look almost exactly the same. Think of placing two identical pillows on the two ends of a sofa. It feels neat, calm, and orderly.
• Asymmetrical balance (The Clever Seesaw): This happens when the two sides are different, but they still feel equal. Imagine a seesaw with a big, heavy adult on one side. To balance it out, you do not need another adult—you could put three or four kids on the other side instead! In a painting, an artist might balance one huge, dark tree on the left by painting several small, bright flowers on the right.
• Radial balance (The Wheel): This is balance that grows out from the center, like the petals on a daisy, the spokes on a bicycle wheel, or the pepperoni slices on a round pizza. Everything spreads out evenly from the middle.
