ELI5: What Is Art Nouveau?

Art Nouveau is an art style from about a hundred years ago that tried to make everyday, ordinary things look like beautiful parts of nature.

Imagine if a fairy waved a magic wand over your house, and suddenly everything grew gentle curves, leaves, and flowers. Instead of things being boxy, straight, and plain, artists wanted to make the whole world look pretty and alive.

They did not just paint pictures to hang on a wall; they wanted art to be everywhere in your everyday life:

• Your Morning Routine: You would brush your hair with a silver brush carved like a blooming lily, and check your reflection in a mirror shaped like climbing vines.
• Furniture: A chair or a bed was not just made of straight pieces of wood. The legs would curve like tree roots, and the back might look like the open wings of a butterfly.
• Buildings and Doors: Walking down the street, you might see front doors with swirly, wavy iron bars that looked like sea waves. The windows could be made of colorful glass shaped like peacocks or sunsets.
• Everyday Objects: Even things like teacups, lamps, and subway entrances were shaped like giant glowing mushrooms, dragonfly wings, or flower petals.
