ELI5: what is animism
Animism is the belief that everything around us—like trees, rivers, rocks, and even the wind—has its own spirit, feelings, and life, just like people and animals do.
Imagine if you treated the whole world like it was full of friends. When you play with your favorite teddy bear, you might give it a name, talk to it, tuck it into bed, and make sure it does not get hurt. In everyday life, a person who practices animism does something very similar with nature and everyday objects.
Here is how animism looks in daily life:
- Talking to Nature: If you go outside, you might say "good morning" to a giant oak tree in your backyard, believing that the tree hears you and enjoys your company.
- Showing Respect: Before picking a flower or swimming in a river, you might ask for permission or whisper a quiet "thank you." You believe the river is not just water, but a living neighbor who deserves respect.
- Apologizing to Objects: If you accidentally bump into a heavy wooden table or drop a smooth stone, you might say "sorry" because you feel the object has its own presence.
- Giving Gifts: People might leave a small treat, like a drop of honey or a shiny pebble, at the foot of a mountain to show gratitude for its protection.
