ELI5: What is AI actually?
Imagine your brain, but for a computer! That's kind of like AI, which stands for Artificial Intelligence. It's about making computers smart enough to do things that usually need a human brain.
Think about how you learn. You see lots of cats, and someone tells you, "That's a cat!". After seeing enough cats, you can recognize a cat even if it's a different color or size. AI learns in a similar way, but with data.
Here's how AI shows up in your everyday life:
- Siri or Alexa: When you ask Siri or Alexa a question, AI helps them understand what you're saying and find the answer. They learned by listening to lots of people talking.
- Netflix recommendations: When Netflix suggests shows you might like, that's AI at work! It looks at what you've watched before and finds similar things.
- Google Translate: When you type something in English and Google Translate turns it into Spanish, AI is translating. It learned by reading lots of text in different languages.
- Self-driving cars (someday!): These cars use AI to see the road, understand traffic signals, and drive safely. They learn by driving millions of miles (virtually, at first).
- Learn from data.
- Recognize patterns.
- Make decisions based on what they've learned.
