ELI5: What is a neural processing unit

A neural processing unit (NPU) is like a tiny brain inside your phone or computer that's really good at learning and recognizing patterns.

Imagine you have a special friend who's learning to recognize cats. At first, they don't know what a cat looks like.

• You show them lots of pictures of cats: fluffy cats, black cats, small cats, big cats.
• Each time, you tell them "That's a cat!"
• After seeing many pictures, your friend starts to notice things that are common to all cats, like pointy ears, whiskers, and a certain shape.

• Face recognition: When your phone unlocks by looking at your face, the NPU is working. It has learned the pattern of your face and can quickly recognize you.
• Voice assistants: When you talk to Siri or Alexa, the NPU helps understand what you're saying, even if you don't speak perfectly clearly. It has learned to recognize different words and accents.
• Better photos: When you take a picture, the NPU can recognize what's in the photo (like people, landscapes, or food) and automatically adjust the settings to make the picture look better.
