ELI5: What happens if oil prices keep rising from the war?
If oil prices keep rising because of the war, things will cost more money.
Imagine oil is like the magic ingredient that makes lots of things work, especially things that move. When the magic ingredient gets more expensive, everything that uses it also gets more expensive.
- Traveling: Think about your parents driving you to school. Cars need gasoline, which is made from oil. If oil prices go up, gasoline gets more expensive, so your parents will have to pay more to drive you. Maybe they'll drive less, or you might take the bus.
- Food: Trucks use gasoline to bring food to the grocery store. If gasoline is expensive, the trucks cost more to run, so the food in the store gets more expensive too. Your favorite cereal, fruits, and even snacks might cost a little more than they used to.
- Heating and Cooling: Many homes use oil to heat in the winter or electricity generated using oil. Higher oil prices mean higher heating bills in the winter and higher electricity bills to run the air conditioner in the summer.
- Toys and Clothes: Even toys and clothes are often made in factories that use oil and are shipped using trucks and ships that also use oil. So, if oil prices go up, even your toys and clothes might cost more.
