ELI5: What happens if all satellites stop working?
Imagine our Earth has lots of super-high toys called satellites floating way up in space. These toys help us with lots of things. What happens if all these space toys suddenly break? It's like a giant power outage, but for space!
- No GPS: Remember your parents' phone map that tells them where to go? That uses satellites. Suddenly, no more map! Getting lost becomes much easier. Delivery trucks get lost too.
- No Accurate Time: Many things, like ATMs and the internet, use very precise time from satellites to work correctly. If they stop, ATMs might not work, and some parts of the internet could become unreliable.
- No Weather Forecasts: Those cool weather reports on TV? They use satellite images to see storms coming. Without them, we won't know if a big rainstorm or snowstorm is headed our way until it's almost here.
- No TV or Radio (Sometimes): Some TV channels and radio stations use satellites to send their signals. Some channels might disappear.
- Cell Phones Partially Affected: While cell towers themselves work, satellites assist in coordinating networks. The loss of this could lead to more dropped calls, slower data speeds, and difficulty connecting to emergency services.
- Airplanes and Ships: Pilots and ship captains use satellites for navigation. Without them, they'd have to rely on older, less accurate methods, making travel less safe.
