ELI5: what does characteristics mean
In science, characteristics are the special clues, features, or qualities that describe what something is like and help us tell it apart from other things.
Think of a characteristic as a superpower or a nametag that belongs to an object, plant, or animal. If you were describing your best friend in a crowded room, you might say, "They have curly red hair, wear glasses, and have a loud laugh." In science, those details are characteristics. They help scientists sort, group, and understand everything in the universe.
Here are a few ways scientists look at characteristics:
- Living Things: Think about a tiger. Its characteristics include having orange fur, black stripes, sharp claws, and four legs. A goldfish has very different characteristics, like shiny scales, fins, and the ability to breathe underwater.
- Non-Living Things: Think about water. Some of its characteristics are that it is wet, clear, and can turn into hard ice when it gets super cold.
- Rocks and Minerals: A scientist studying a rock might look at characteristics like whether it is rough or smooth, heavy or light, or shiny like a diamond.
