ELI5: What are proteins?
Proteins are like tiny building blocks that help our bodies grow, stay strong, and work properly.
Think of your body like a house. You need lots of different materials to build it, right? You need wood, bricks, windows, and doors. Proteins are like the bricks and wood of your body. They help build your muscles, bones, skin, and even your hair!
Here's how they work:
- Building Blocks: Imagine LEGOs. Proteins are made of smaller LEGO pieces called amino acids. There are different kinds of amino acids, and they connect together in different ways to make all sorts of different proteins.
- Doing Work: Proteins also do lots of important jobs. Some proteins are like tiny delivery trucks carrying things around your body. For example, hemoglobin is a protein that carries oxygen in your blood.
- Fighting Germs: Other proteins are like soldiers that fight off bad germs that try to make you sick. These are called antibodies.
- Helping with Food: Some proteins, called enzymes, help you digest your food. They're like tiny scissors that cut up the food into smaller pieces so your body can use it.
- Good sources of proteins include meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, nuts, and even some vegetables. When you eat these foods, your body breaks down the proteins into amino acids and uses them to build and repair things in your own body.
