ELI5: Tyranny

In everyday life, tyranny means that one person is being completely bossy, unfair, and controlling, forcing everyone else to follow their rules without caring about anyone else's feelings.

Imagine you are playing with your friends in a sandbox. Normally, everyone shares the toys, builds castles together, and takes turns. But then, one kid grabs all the shovels, sits in the middle, and says: "This is my sandbox! You can only touch the sand if I say so, and you must build whatever I tell you to build."

That bossy kid is acting like a tyrant, and their behavior is called tyranny.

In our normal, daily lives, people use the word tyranny to describe situations where someone has too much power and uses it to be mean or unfair.

Here are a few ways you might see it:

  • On the playground: When an older kid takes over the swings and refuses to let anyone else use them all day.
  • During family game night: When a sibling demands that everyone play only the game they want, changes the rules to help themselves win, and gets angry if anyone disagrees.
  • At school or work: When a group leader makes everyone else do all the hard work while they sit back and take all the credit.
People also use the word in a funny, dramatic way for things that feel like they have total, annoying control over our lives. For example:
  • The tyranny of the alarm clock: When that loud, buzzing clock forces you out of your warm bed every morning, even when you really want to sleep.
  • The tyranny of chores: When your messy room makes it feel like you are not allowed to go outside and have fun until every single sock is put away.
So, whenever someone is being super bossy, unfair, and refuses to share or listen to others, that is what tyranny feels like in everyday life.
