ELI5: Marxism

Context: Lego 8 views Dec 9, 2025 2 min read

Imagine you and your friends have a HUGE box of Lego bricks.

Marxism is like a way of thinking about how you and your friends decide who gets to play with the Lego, and what you build.

  • In a simplified Marxist view:
Some kids (the owners) own most of the Lego pieces, like all the cool special bricks, the baseplates, and the instructions. They're like the bourgeoisie. Other kids (the workers) don't own many Lego pieces. They mostly just have plain bricks. They're like the proletariat. The owners get to decide what everyone builds, usually something they want. The workers just follow instructions.
  • Marxism says this isn't fair! The owners benefit more, even though the workers are the ones actually building. The workers are being exploited. They aren't getting a fair share of the fun.
  • What do Marxists want?
They want the workers to realize they're being treated unfairly (class consciousness). They want the workers to work together and share the Lego more fairly (revolution). Maybe everyone puts all the Lego in one big pile and votes on what to build together. This is like communism – everyone owns the Lego together!
  • In short: Marxism is about who owns the Lego, who does the building, and if it's a fair system. It's about sharing and making sure everyone benefits, not just the kids who already have lots of Lego.
