ELI5: How the internet gets to my home?
Imagine the internet is like a giant network of roads, and your house is like a house on one of those roads. You want to order a pizza (that's your internet request!). Here's how it gets to your house:
- You ask for the pizza! You type
google.comor click a link. Your computer sends a message (like a phone call!) to your router. The router is like the manager of your house's internet traffic.
- The router calls the Pizza Place. Your router looks up where
google.comis (its "address"). It then sends your request on to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Think of the ISP as a big pizza delivery company, like Domino's or Pizza Hut.
- The ISP finds the best route. The ISP uses really fast "roads" (called fiber optic cables or sometimes old-fashioned phone lines!) to send your request on its way. These cables are like superhighways for information! They can be buried underground or strung on poles.
- Connecting to the bigger network. The ISP connects to even bigger "roads" connecting different cities and countries. These "roads" are managed by big companies that own huge networks of cables.
- The pizza is made! Your request finally reaches the computer that runs
google.com. That computer makes the "pizza" (the website you want to see) and sends it back.
- The pizza delivery! The "pizza" (the website data) travels back along the same "roads," going from the big networks to your ISP.
- The ISP delivers to your door! Your ISP sends the "pizza" from their location through the cables to your house.
- The router gives you the pizza! Your router receives the "pizza" and gives it to your computer, which displays the website.
