ELI5: How far away is the nearest star?
Imagine you're throwing a ball really, really far. Space is HUGE, much bigger than any park or even the whole Earth!
The Sun is a star, and it's pretty close, which is why it's so bright and warm. But other stars are way, way further away.
Think of it like this:
- Our Sun is like your house.
- The nearest star, called Proxima Centauri, is like your friend's house, but really, really far away.
We can't use miles or kilometers because the numbers would be too big! Instead, we use something called a light-year. A light-year is how far light travels in one year. Light is super fast! It travels 300,000 kilometers per second!
So, imagine a beam of light zooming through space for a whole year. The distance it covers is one light-year.
Proxima Centauri is about 4.24 light-years away. That means it would take light more than four years to travel from that star to us! If you could travel as fast as light, it'd still take you over four years to get there!
That's a very, very long trip! So, the nearest star is incredibly far away, much farther than anything you can imagine on Earth!
