ELI5: How does vertical farming work

Vertical farming is like growing plants in a tall apartment building instead of a flat field.

Imagine your mom has lots of plants, but not much space in your house. Vertical farming is the same idea, but for growing lots of food! Instead of spreading plants out on the ground like a farm, we stack them up, one on top of the other, inside a building.

Think about it like this:

• Regular Farming: You need a big field, lots of sunshine, and rain. It takes up lots of space!
• Vertical Farming: You use a building, special lights, and water delivered right to the plants. You can grow many more plants in the same amount of ground space!

• Stacking Plants: Plants are grown in layers, like books on a bookshelf.
• Special Lights: Because they're inside, they need special LED lights that act like the sun, helping them grow. Think of it like a really bright lamp just for plants.
• Water & Nutrients: Instead of rain, the plants get water and nutrients (like vitamins for plants!) delivered directly to their roots. This is often done through hydroponics, which means growing plants without soil, using water with all the good stuff they need.
• Climate Control: The building is kept at the perfect temperature and humidity, like a cozy room for the plants.
