ELI5: how does smart home work
A smart home works by letting you control things in your house, like lights or the TV, using your voice or your phone.
Imagine your house is like a big toy box filled with smart toys – things like smart lights, a smart thermostat (that controls the temperature), and a smart TV. Normally, you'd have to go to each toy and press a button or flip a switch to make it work.
But with a smart home, you have a special remote control – that's your smartphone or a smart speaker like Alexa or Google Home. These special remotes talk to a smart hub, which is like the toy box’s supervisor.
Here's how it works:
- You tell your smart speaker, "Alexa, turn on the living room lights."
- Your voice goes to the smart speaker.
- The smart speaker sends a message to the smart hub.
- The smart hub understands the message and sends another message to the smart lights.
- The smart lights receive the message and turn on!
You can also use your phone to control things when you're not even home! If you forgot to turn off the lights, you can open an app on your phone and turn them off from anywhere. It's like having a super-powered remote control that works from anywhere in the world! This also works for other things, like seeing who's at your front door with a smart doorbell or making sure you didn't leave the oven on. Smart homes just make it easier to manage your house.
