ELI5: How does Singapore manage water supply?

Singapore gets its water from four main "taps": collecting rainwater, buying water from Malaysia, making water clean again, and turning seawater into drinking water.

Imagine Singapore like a little garden that needs water to grow. But it doesn't have a big river or lake like other gardens! So, it needs to be clever about getting water.

• Rain, Rain, Don't Go Away! Singapore catches rainwater in big containers called reservoirs. Think of them as giant buckets placed all around the garden. When it rains, the buckets fill up, and the water is stored to use later.

• Borrowing from a Neighbor: Singapore is like a friendly kid who sometimes borrows water from their neighbor, Malaysia. They have a special pipe that brings the water over.

• Making Old Water New Again: Sometimes, the water we use for washing and flushing gets dirty. But Singapore has a super cool machine called NEWater that cleans this water until it's so clean, we can drink it! It's like turning muddy water back into sparkling clean water.

• Salty Water, No Problem! Singapore is surrounded by the sea, but we can't drink salty water. So, they have special factories called desalination plants that take the salt out of the seawater, making it fresh and drinkable. It's like having a magic filter that turns ocean water into drinking water!
