ELI5: How does shining a laser pointer affect a security camera?
Shining a laser pointer directly into a security camera temporarily blinds it by flooding its digital eye with too much light, and a strong laser can even melt the camera inside and break it forever.
Think of a security camera like a human eye. In everyday life, when you walk into a room, your eyes collect normal light bouncing off walls, furniture, and people so you can see where you are going. A camera does the exact same thing using a tiny electronic part called an image sensor, which acts like the back of an eyeball.
Now, imagine you are sitting in a dark movie theater and someone suddenly flashes a giant, super-bright spotlight directly into your face. For a moment, you cannot see the movie, the seats, or your friends—you can only see a massive white glare.
When a laser hits a camera, two things can happen:
- Temporary Blinding (Glare): A weak laser pointer floods the image sensor with light that is thousands of times brighter than ordinary room light. The camera gets confused and overwhelmed, creating a huge white spot or an entirely blank screen. The camera cannot record what a person is doing because the glare covers everything up. Once the laser moves away, the camera usually goes back to normal.
- Permanent Damage (Melting): A powerful laser acts like a tiny, focused heat ray. It is like using a magnifying glass on a sunny day to burn a dry leaf. The laser concentrates so much heat onto the camera's delicate image sensor that it can physically burn, crack, or melt the tiny pixels. When this happens, the camera gets permanent dead spots, lines across the video, or stops working entirely, even after the laser is turned off.
