ELI5: How does measles get into your body in the first place?

26 views Dec 11, 2025 1 min read

Imagine someone has the measles and they cough or sneeze really close to you.

Think of it like this:

  • The measles is caused by tiny, tiny germs called a virus.
  • When someone with measles coughs or sneezes, these tiny germs fly out into the air in tiny droplets of spit and mucus. It's like when you blow bubbles, but these are invisible bubbles full of measles germs.
Now, how do they get into you?
  • You breathe in the air.
  • These tiny bubbles (with the measles germs inside) float in the air and you breathe them in.
  • The germs land in your nose and throat.
  • The virus then starts to multiply inside your body, making you sick.
It's also possible, but less likely, to get it if you touch a surface where these droplets landed very recently and then touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. This is because the virus can sometimes survive on surfaces for a short time. But breathing them in from the air is the main way measles spreads. That's why it's so easy for measles to spread quickly, especially in places like schools or daycare centers!
