Reading a painting means looking at it like a visual storybook to figure out what is happening, how it makes you feel, and why the artist made it.

Just like you might look out your window to see what the weather is like, you can look at a painting to find clues about a different time, place, or mood. You do not need to be an expert to do this; you just need to use your eyes and imagination like a detective.

Here is how you can read any painting in everyday life:

• Look at the main subject: Start by asking what the picture shows. Is it a person waiting for a bus, a bowl of fruit on a kitchen table, or a busy playground? This is the main character or the setting of the story.
• Notice the colors and light: Colors act like background music in a movie. Bright yellows and warm oranges feel cheerful and energetic, like a sunny day at the beach. Dark blues and heavy grays can feel quiet, calm, or a little sad, like a rainy Sunday afternoon.
• Search for hidden clues: Look at the small details, just like you would notice what someone is wearing in real life. Is the person in the painting smiling or looking tired? Are they holding a book, a broom, or a flower? These tiny objects give you hints about their daily routine or their feelings.
• Check the arrangement: Think about where your eyes go first. Artists place the most important thing right in the spotlight or make it the biggest object in the room, just like how a director frames a scene in a cartoon.
• Ask how it makes you feel: The most important step is your own reaction. A good painting makes you connect with everyday human feelings, like the comfort of being at home, the excitement of an adventure, or the quiet peace of bedtime.
