ELI5: How do bees make honey?

Bees make honey by collecting sweet juice from flowers, carrying it home in a special tummy, and drying it out inside their hive until it turns thick and sweet.

Think of it like baking a sweet syrup with your family, but the bees do it all with nature:

  • Flower Shopping: Just like you go to the supermarket to get ingredients, worker bees fly to bright flowers to sip a sugary liquid called nectar. You can think of nectar as the flower's fruit juice.
  • The Backpack Tummy: Bees have two bellies. One is for their own lunch, but the other is a honey stomach, which acts like a shopping bag. They fill this extra tummy with nectar to carry it safely home. While it sits there, special natural helpers called enzymes start breaking the complex sugars down into simple sugars.
  • Sharing the Recipe: When the bee gets home to the hive, she passes the nectar mouth-to-mouth to other bees, like kids passing a bucket of water down a line. Each bee adds more helpers from her own tummy, making the juice less watery.
  • Blowing Dry: The juice is still too runny, like soup. To fix this, the bees pour the liquid into little wax rooms called honeycomb cells and flap their wings super fast, just like a hairdryer blowing on cool mode. This breeze dries out the extra water.
  • Wrapping It Up: Once the liquid turns thick, gooey, and golden, the bees put a little beeswax lid on top to keep it clean and fresh, just like putting a lid on a jar of peanut butter in your kitchen pantry.
Now the bees have a sweet, long-lasting snack ready for winter, and sometimes, they make extra that we get to eat on our toast!
