ELI5: How did Iran attack Israel in the war?

7 views Mar 23, 2026 2 min read

Iran attacked Israel by sending missiles and drones, kind of like sending a bunch of toy airplanes and rockets to a neighbor's house.

Imagine you and your friend live next door to each other. You have a disagreement and get really angry. Instead of talking it out, you decide to throw toys over the fence into their yard.

  • The missiles are like big, fast toy rockets: They fly high in the sky and travel a long distance to reach their target. Some are intercepted mid-air, like your mom catching a toy rocket before it lands.
  • The drones are like small, slow toy airplanes: They also fly in the sky, but they are slower and easier to spot. Your neighbor has more time to try and swat them down.
Think of it this way:
  • Iran = You, the angry friend.
  • Israel = Your neighbor.
  • Missiles and drones = The toy rockets and airplanes.
  • Interception = Mom catching the toy rockets.
The reason Iran did this is complicated, but it's like you being mad at your neighbor for something they did to your other friend, or because you feel they have something that belongs to you. They didn't physically send people to fight on the ground, but used the missiles and drones to try and cause damage from far away. This is why it's called an attack from afar. The war is an ongoing disagreement, and this attack was one of the ways they are fighting.
