A rocket ship works by shooting hot gas out the back very fast, which pushes the rocket forward just like when you let the air out of a balloon.

Imagine you have a big balloon. When you fill it with air and hold the end, the air is stuck inside. But when you let go, the air shoots out the back really fast. This makes the balloon zoom around the room. A rocket does the same thing, but instead of air, it uses super hot gas made from burning fuel.

Here is how it works in simple steps:

  • The rocket has a tank full of fuel and another tank full of oxygen.
  • Inside the engine, the fuel and oxygen mix and get super hot, turning into gas.
  • This hot gas shoots out the bottom of the rocket very fast, like the air from your balloon.
  • Because the gas pushes down hard, the rocket gets pushed up high into the sky.
In everyday life, you can see this when you step on a mud patch and your foot pushes the mud down, so your leg goes up. Or think about a swimmer pushing water back with their hands to move forward. The rocket pushes gas down to move up. It does not need wings to fly because the gas pushing out is strong enough to lift it all by itself. This is why rockets can go so high, even past the clouds where birds cannot fly. The engine is the part that makes the gas shoot out, and it is the most important part for making the rocket go up.
