The dewpoint is the exact temperature the air needs to cool down to so that invisible water in the air turns into real, wet drops of water.

Think of the air around you like a giant, invisible sponge.

  • When the air is warm, it is like a huge, stretchy sponge that can hold a lot of invisible water, which is called water vapor.
  • When the air cools down, the sponge shrinks and cannot hold as much water anymore.
  • If the air gets cold enough to reach the dewpoint temperature, the sponge gets completely full and cannot hold one single drop more.
When this happens, the sponge has to squeeze the extra water out. That is why you see tiny water drops—called dew—on the grass in the morning after a chilly night. It is also why a cold can of soda gets wet on the outside on a warm day; the cold can chills the air touching it down to its dewpoint, making water drops appear.

In everyday weather, the dewpoint tells us how the air will actually feel on your skin:

  • Low dewpoint (below 55 degrees): The air feels dry, crisp, and comfortable.
  • Medium dewpoint (55 to 65 degrees): The air feels normal and pleasant.
  • High dewpoint (above 65 degrees): The air feels sticky, muggy, and sweaty because the air sponge is already too full of water.
So, whenever you hear a weather reporter talk about a high dewpoint, grab a cold drink, because it is going to feel sticky outside!
