ELI5: Countervailing Power

Countervailing power is what happens when smaller, weaker people join forces to create their own big power, balancing out someone else who already has a lot of control.

Imagine a giant playground seesaw. On one side sits a very big kid, weighing it completely down. If you sit on the other side by yourself, your feet stay stuck in the air. But if you call all your friends over and you all sit together on the empty side, your combined weight balances the seesaw. That combined strength is countervailing power.

In everyday life, this idea pops up whenever people feel like someone else holds all the cards. Here are a few simple examples:

• Apartment Renters: If your landlord raises the rent by a huge amount, you might not be able to stop them alone. But if everyone living in the building forms a tenant group and refuses to pay unfair prices together, the landlord has to listen.
• Neighborhood Shoppers: If the only grocery store in town charges crazy prices for fruit, one person complaining will not change anything. But if the whole neighborhood agrees to start a food co-op or shop at a local farmers market, the big store is forced to lower its prices to win customers back.
• School Playtime: If one bossy kid always decides who gets the swing set, the other kids can agree to play together somewhere else. By sticking together, they remove the bossy kid's power to control the fun.
