ELI5: Could humans live on Mars?

Imagine our Earth, where you can breathe fresh air and play outside easily. Now, imagine Mars, a faraway planet. Can we live there like we do here? It's a tough question!

Right now, it's very hard to live on Mars everyday because:

• No Air to Breathe: Mars' air is mostly carbon dioxide, which is like the air you breathe out. We need oxygen to live, like the air we breathe in. We'd need special spacesuits or domes filled with Earth-like air.

• Super Cold: Mars is freezing! Imagine it's winter all the time, way colder than even the coldest place on Earth. We'd need heated houses and clothes.

• Radiation Problems: Earth has a shield that protects us from harmful radiation from the sun. Mars doesn't have that shield, so we could get sick easily. We'd need special shelters to block the radiation.

• Food and Water: We can't just grow food on Mars right now. The soil is different. We'd have to bring food from Earth or learn how to grow it in special greenhouses. Water is frozen, so we'd have to melt it and clean it.

• Long Travel: Getting to Mars takes a long time – many months! It's like a super long car trip, but in space.

• Making air using Martian resources.
• Building underground homes for warmth and radiation protection.
• Developing special plants that can grow on Mars.
